I heard a story recently about a conversation between Neil Young and another musician after hearing the news of the Chinese Tiananmen Square massacre in 1989. In response to the news of such abhorrent oppression, Mr. Young stated, “Well, keep on Rocking in the free world”. As he said it, he realized it had such a catchy sound that he wrote a song based on it. The thing that strikes me when listening to this song is that Mr. Young apparently could not bring himself to write something positive about the current western free world culture. So, instead of having the lyrics state what was the truth that inspired those words, the song became yet another song critical of western culture and free world policy. This in my opinion is a blatant example of intellectual dishonesty. A man for a moment expresses an honest logical reaction to truth. But as he ponders it, finds that the truth is contrary to his political views, so he turns the very expression into a meaning that suits his political views thereby sacrificing any semblance to the truth that it once might have voiced. How twisted is that?

Keep on Rockin in the Free World, by Neil Young
Lyrics
http://www.thrasherswheat.org/fot/lyrics_ritfw.htm

Analysis
http://www.thrasherswheat.org/fot/ritfw.htm
